**Cue music from Man From Snowy River – Jessica’s Theme** Possibly my favourite movie of all time, I had the biggest crush on Jim Craig, what a hottie! Are you with me? I knew this movie word for word. Oh and that music, I used to make my friend, Rochelle, play it for me all the time on the piano, I even made her teach me “Jessica’s Theme”. Those were the days!
Anyway, I headed over to the horse yards on the weekend when I noticed everyone over there. Mr Chardy & Georgie were riding their Colts (up here we call all breakers – horses that have recently been broken in – “Colts” weather they are male or female – look at me talking out of my ass again). They broke these in last year. Both horses have only had about 7 rides and they had not been on them for about 8 weeks, so they had to tread carefully.
Here is Georgie. This is the first horse she has ever broken in and from what I could tell she has it going really well. Because you know I am quite the expert when it comes to horses don’t you?!
One thing you need if you are going to break in a horse is PATIENCE…. hence the reason I have decided to give this particular job a miss, in case you were wondering where my “breaker” was. Oh do you need patience…. and lots of it. Just watching Mr Chardy break in a horse gives me the heeby jeeby’s (are they even words?).
These horses were already pretty quiet when they started to break them in because they had been handled since they were weaned. Mr Chardy and Georgie just “mucked around” (that’s the technical term Mr Chardy used when I asked him how long it took them to break these horses in) with these colts for a fair while whilst breaking them in, they didn’t rush it. If we had a professional horse breaker here doing the job he would have a horse broken in within about 7 days.
So guys, there is my low down on the horse scene here at Chardy HQ. I am happy to take questions because you all know how much I love horses! So please, fire away.
