Starting now…. a regular posts about cooking. The backbone of a large cattle station is The Cook and we just happen to have the best cook in the north right here on our doorstep. Cooking is a thankless job but it is one of the most important jobs on the station. With a happy cook comes a happy, well fed stock camp, a happy Manager and a happy wife. Catering for numbers anywhere from 14 – 20 she very flexible.
Ain’t The Cook happy…..Ain’t nobody happy!
Not only is The Cook a great all rounder but she is also a qualified butcher – hell yes!!! That lady can break down a beast like it is nobody’s business. We kill our own beasts which we call a “killer” and of course it is beef – the one and only. Vegetarians look away! Cookie then breaks it down, cuts it up, bags it all and freezes it. She also cuts a mean figure on the mincing machine and CAN and WILL make sausages, yes, this woman is amazing! She has a little butcher shop just off the Station Kitchen where all this butchering caper takes place and a bloody big freezer!
You have never seen a cook quite like her, not only is her food delicious but she is actually spotlessly clean too, puts me to shame that is for sure.
Cookie is my friend and my family up here, there are not many women on the station so we have to stick together. Lucky she loves to drink wine, albeit Sav Blanc but I will excuse that because our gorgeous Jillaroo loves a good Chardy. I am so blessed to have such great women here that I can laugh with, and we do that a lot – laugh!
Now, I know I am a self declared hater of cooking and baking, but I must say I don’t really mind cooking savoury goods, it is just cakes and the like that get me wound up. I come across so many great recipes and I would love to share them all with you here in this special little corner of my blog – The Cook & Chards….what do you think? I love sharing easy and yummy recipes. I hate to keep anything to myself. We really are in the business of good old fashioned wholesome home cooking up here in Woop Woop land….so stay tuned. I hope you enjoy it.
