Outback Cattle Station: Breaking in the Colt

February 10, 2016

**Cue music from Man From Snowy River – Jessica’s Theme** Possibly my favourite movie of all time, I had the biggest crush on Jim Craig, what a hottie!  Are you with me? I knew this movie word for word. Oh and that music, I used to make my friend, Rochelle, play it for me all the time on the piano, I even made her teach me “Jessica’s Theme”.  Those were the days!

Jessica's Theme

Anyway, I headed over to the horse yards on the weekend when I noticed everyone over there.  Mr Chardy & Georgie were riding their Colts (up here we call all breakers – horses that have recently been broken in – “Colts” weather they are male or female – look at me talking out of my ass again).  They broke these in last year.  Both horses have only had about 7 rides and they had not been on them for about 8 weeks, so they had to tread carefully.

Here is Georgie. This is the first horse she has ever broken in and from what I could tell she has it going really well. Because you know I am quite the expert when it comes to horses don’t you?!

One thing you need if you are going to break in a horse is PATIENCE…. hence the reason I have decided to give this particular job a miss, in case you were wondering where my “breaker” was.  Oh do you need patience…. and lots of it.  Just watching Mr Chardy break in a horse gives me the heeby jeeby’s (are they even words?).

These horses were already pretty quiet when they started to break them in because they had been handled since they were weaned.  Mr Chardy and Georgie just “mucked around” (that’s the technical term Mr Chardy used when I asked him how long it took them to break these horses in) with these colts for a fair while whilst breaking them in, they didn’t rush it.  If we had a professional horse breaker here doing the job he would have a horse broken in within about 7 days.

So guys, there is my low down on the horse scene here at Chardy HQ.  I am happy to take questions because you all know how much I love horses!  So please, fire away.

PS: In unrelated news, and possibly a subject I am far more comfortable with – I am having a Facebook jewellery sale tomorrow night – 8pm edst.  I will have 6 original handcrafted items up for sale and you can check them out HERE.  Hope to see you over on Facebook on Thursday 11th.

I know those heebie jeebies. I felt them most recently when I watched my brother disappear over a hill on a horse that seemed committed to spending more time sideways and airborne than is natural for an animal with four legs.
    Have a great day Chards.

Haha Chards you crack me up! Horses are wonderful creatures, you’ve just got to make sure that you have oodles and oodles of patience to break them in, plus you’ve got to make them like you to start with … doesn’t that sound like an easy job … haha maybe not!

Hmmmmm lots of patience… not my bag… definitely easier said than done. People who are good with horses make it look SOOOO easy, ha ha ha!!!

I was in love with The Man from Snowy River too. I actually started having piano lessons just so I could learn to play Jessica’s Theme!!! Unfortunately I became impatient at my progress (it was giving me the heebie jeebies!) so I gave up but I would also ask a friend, who was an incredible pianist, to play it for me at every opportunity. Loving your posts.

I am hearing you, I could only play it by heart not by reading music and I used to always make Rochelle play all of the songs for me, of course she could actually read music. Lucky I had clever friends. ha ha ha. I am thinking I need to change the spelling of Heebie Jeebies in my blog post.. ha ha ha.

Oh i loved that flick 😊 i still want to go and visit Craig’s hut, it’s actually been rebuilt since a fire, but anyway….i love that bolting down the hill scene on horseback, what a fella. Listen to us mums haha!! (And Sigrid, great in that and also, All Rivers run). Now what were we talking about…? Oh yes, breaking in horses…now that’s a tough job, but it sounds like Mr Chards and the awesome jill of all trades are all over it it. They must’ve been tired after that task though.

I love the movie as well. I walked down the isle to this song when I married my husband. It brings back great memories of our wedding day every time I hear it. I loved this movie so much, I called my first stock horse that I bought Danny and he was the same buckskin colour as the one in the movie. He was biiten by a snake and is no longer with us. Great to see some photos of property life. Breaking in horses in the heat and humidity in the NT is hard work!

Hi Mel, oh I know – that song is just the best isn’t it. Never gets old. My sister had a horse called Danny too. 🙂 As for horses and the heat – I just don’t know how they do it – sure must LOVE horses!!!

With Mansfield as my hometown I absolutely loved that movie and my brother-in-law plays Jessica’s Theme perfectly on the piano. I am however, not so fond of horses and much preferred a motorbike 😉

It is just the best soundtrack isn’t it Sarah. How are things up your way all the way over the other side of the world?
