Outback Cattle Station: The Wet Season

December 31, 2016

It just occurred to me yesterday that I haven’t left the station compound since 10th December.  It is no wonder I feel a little down at this time of the year.  This little extrovert is stuck here with just 2 other adults.  Actually, I tell a lie.  I have been to the dump.  Twice!!  That was a nice little outing.  But apart from that it is usually just me and 3 kids, day in, day out.   Thankfully this year Georgie is here so I do get to have Wine Time with another female.  I think we are going to have a bit of girlie time today and watch Bad Mums, which I am looking forward to.

Now, why am I stuck here you may ask if you are new to Chardyland???!!!  It is the wet season.  Did you know we have 165km of dirt road?  Not sure if I have ever mentioned that… but yes, indeed we do.  The first 65km of that road is pretty ordinary and you can’t drive on it after rain.  I think we have had around 5 inches of rain for December which is really nice.  It was so lovely seeing all the rain fall around Christmas.

There is just one problem. Our car is still sitting here in the shed.  Of course it is!  We usually put it down on the bitumen at the start of December so we are right to drive away for holidays.  I did say to Mr Chardy before Christmas “Do you think we should be getting the cars out???” …. Obviously it didn’t eventuate and I should have taken matters into my own hands and just sorted that shit out.

We do still have a little time up our sleeves.  We are supposed to check into the Sunshine Coast on 14th January…. that gives us a few days for the road to dry out.   I am not giving up hope.  I don’t want to wish the rain away but a few dry days would be much appreciated or it will be #operationgetusout !!!

Now, because I realised I haven’t left the station in quite a while I asked Mr Chardy to take me down to have a look at the river in the buggy.  This is the situation my friends…

It was so lovely sitting down there listening to the water running.  Very soothing for the soul and a lovely little outing.

I know we are not the only people in this boat.  Many people who live up here on these cattle stations face the same dilemma.  Just ask my friend Flick (who has about 4 hours worth of dirt road, maybe more) … her son missed Christmas with them because they were trying to get him back in after being away on a school excursion.  He missed Christmas… he is only 17.  He managed to finally get home on the 27th December but that is a who other story.

So this is where we are at… rained in.  It is pretty wet out and about.  The only way to check on things or get out, at the moment, is in a plane or chopper.

Any plans for NYE?  I am not going to lie… 2016 has been a bitch of a year and I will be quite happy to boot it right out of my life once an for all. But having said that, I guess I am just going to have to get used to sadness and grief… people are going to keep on dying aren’t they?!!!  It is the one certainty in life, along with taxes.  But come on – 2017 please be kinder to us all!

I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year.  Thanks for your support throughout 2016, you all help keep me sane, I am not even kidding.  Thanks for being a part of this little community we call Miss Chardy, I absolutely love chatting to you all.  Thanks so much!!!!

Have a great night if you are partying on!

How are things looking at your place?
Had any rain?  How much?
Do you have your car out, ready for holidays or are you stuck like us?
Happy to say goodbye to 2016?  Yep, me too!

When it rained in norwest NSW We used to have to leave our car out on the bitumen when we lived on a farm house at Narrabri so we could walk to it, in our gumboots carrying our school teaching needs & a baby (who went next door for caring) to get to our teaching jobs. This is a memory from 1970s. In 1976 at Weilmoringle we were stuck at school/home for 10 weeks thanks to flood rains from Qld coming down to NSW via Culgoa R. Yep. Know a bit about what 10mm of rain can do to stop the teachers from leaving to go on school hols too! Hope you get to sunny Coast!! Happy New Year! D x

We are stuck in too Miss Chardy – have had over five inches since Christmas – AND our car is stuck in too, on the wrong side of the Victoria and Camfield rivers! At least we have until the 24th to try and get them out though. Wishing you, Mr Chardy and the boys are wonderful New Year! Going to thaw out some prawns and pop a bottle of bubbly to ring in 2017 🙂

Please send some rain our way Dan! It’s hot and dry here, with a hot wind coming from up your way I think! I’m engrossed in a 963 page Diana Gabaldon novel (of Outlander fame) which is a good thing because it’s too hot to do anything else but sit still and read. So many people are saying what a terrible year 2016 has been. You have had more than your share of tragedy in this and previous years. Wishing you the richest blessings that a kind and loving universe can bestow upon you for 2017. You deserve it so much. Love Jo xxx

Again I read a post by you and I can’t help but feel same same…but different. I live in a compound which is kind of like an outback station in the sense that every now and then you just gotta get out or you will go crazy!! However, instead of going home to Oz and joining all the other expats in the mass exit for holidays, we stayed in Moscow for a White Christmas. Hubby is working so most days its just me and our two boys. Its been pretty nice though….its quiet – everyone is away, the snow is beautiful and its been warm enough (between -4 & 0) for us to get out and enjoy it. Happy New Year and hope that road dries in time for you to get to the beach 🙂
