Who doesn’t love a day at the races?  Dressing up and feeling fabulous.  I sure do, it is one of my favourite social outings.  Nothing better than catching up with friends over a glass of bubbly wearing your best frock and a stunning fascinator – especially if it is an Allport Designs custom made piece.

Allow me to introduce Sophie Allport.  Sophie is a gorgeous girl inside and out who grew up near the tiny town of North Star and boarded at The Scots PGC College in Warwick.   Sophie arrived on our doorstep in 2010, fresh out of school, as our first Governess when Tom was in Prep.   She flew in on the mail plane and when I greeted her I knew we would get on just fine, such a big happy smile, and that hair… I have never met anyone who has hair that is this blonde and ….. natural!

Soph and Tom in the Schoolroom

Soph was the perfect Governess to teach a Prep student as she was very “arty”.  She went above and beyond in the school room with hours upon hours of art and craft (better her than me – I can’t stand all of that mess).   It was heaven for our 5 year old.

Tom on bike

Soph painted this picture from a photo she took while Governessing for us. This is Tom riding his bike down our main road. It takes pride of place on our dining room wall. Thanks Soph.

When Soph left she didn’t really know what she wanted to do, so headed to Uni to study Visual Arts Teaching, but, after a year,  decided this was not for her.  Soph was still worried that she didn’t know what she was going to do with her life.  I kept telling her that  all would be fine, she was so talented and things would fall into place for her, big things were going to happen.

In 2013 Soph headed down to Melbourne and completed a Diploma of Fashion Business at The Melbourne Fashion Institute and was also offered a job at a millinery supplies company where she now works 5 days a week (2 half days so she can still do her millinery). Soph also manages the social media and marketing for this business.

Although Soph has been in Melbourne for such a short time she has achieved so much.  Having model and television presenter Rebecca Judd wear an Allport Designs piece for a Saba Spring Racing Trends event has been one of the highlights of her career so far.  Sophie also collaborated with accessories brand Olga Berg to design a 20 piece leather range. Soph was also offered an internship with Richard Nylon and worked with him during the lead up to Spring Fashion Week last year.

Great things are happning for this bright, bubbly 22 year old and I can’t wait to follow her journey which is only just beginning.  Good luck Soph, and don’t forget to sneak this old girl from the outback into The Birdcage when you have made it big time. xxx

You are amazing Dan! So sorry I am just getting to it now! I am so overwhelmed and flattered that you would choose to write about me! (Writing material must be low) ha ha kidding. I will never forget my incredible days in the NT, our Friday afternoon “meetings” (wine time-no kids allowed). I can’t wait to get back there one day, hopefully… And baby if I get into the birdcage and your not there it just wouldn’t be the same! I have been so lucky to meet beautiful people like Janelle Rayner and yourself along the way. I just hope everyone takes the time to have fun along the way and do what makes them happy.

I knew Sophie as a little girl and her family when I lived at North Star and she used to come to the mobile childcare where I then worked as a childcare assistant for Tharawonga Mobile Resource Unit, Her mum was on the committee . Sophie was a beautiful little person then with a big smile. Sophie comes from a beautiful loving family. I am so proud of the young lady that she has become. Her mum is an amazing person with a beautiful heart whom I admired and what I saw back then a wonderful parent. Her parents were hard workers. Sophie has obviously inherited this from her parents and achieved great things in her young life. Well done Sophie , you have such flair and amazing talent , love your designs. xx

Such a lovely tribute to a simply delightful, talented and gorgeous girl. We have known Soph for many years from North Star in NSW. Incredible things were always going to happen for her, from when Soph was a young girl helping to look after one of my boys right up until now with her stunning and amazing designs being proudly worn across the country. We all look forward to following her journey and joining her in the BIRDCAGE too!!!!

Sophie was destined to follow her dream – in January 2013 a student booked into millinery 10day workshop @ Uni of Sthn Qld cancelled at the last minute and this allowed Sophie to fill the gap to start her Millinery journey. She showed talent and enthusiasm from the start. Now developing her own signature brand – so proud of you Sophie.
