Barkly Women’s Day 2018

November 19, 2018

On the weekend gorgeous women from stations near and far – mainly far – mustered at the Barkly Homestead Roadhouse for Barkly Women’s Day.  The Barkly Homestead is a roadhouse like no other.  Yes, sure – it is a service station/roadhouse but it is so much more.  A motel, a caravan park, a restaurant, a pub, an airport… oh and it is literally in the middle of nowhere – between Camooweal in QLD and Tennant Creek in the NT.

So when travellers come through during one of our Women’s Days they must wonder where the hell this bunch of hotties came from because they probably only passed one house during the hundreds of km’s they have been driving for.

Our weekend started on Friday.  Ruby, Lisa and I headed down on Friday afternoon where we met up with some other fellow station women who had also travelled a long way – well much further than us really.  My old mate Sue – who I first came up here to Governess for in 2001 – travelled all the way down from Darwin on Friday and then home again Sunday.  Now that is dedication, only about 12 or 13 hours, no biggie.

Of course Felicity hosted drinks on the lawn on Friday afternoon – of course she did – because she is the hostess with the hostess.  Cheese, Gin and wine – why would you need to go anywhere else?

On Saturday we had such a lovely bunch of women turn up.  There was only about 35 of us but seriously, I am considering capping it at 35 every year because it was just the perfect number of women, not too squashy, just right.

The day started with a coffee – iced coffee if you will, some call it an Espresso Martini…

Or perhaps bubbles on arrival…

Lots of finger food and then a lovely luncheon after the panel of speakers.

We didn’t have any guest speakers this year so we decided to wing it and do something different.  I got three Barkly Stalwarts up on a panel and I moderated.  Just call me Opera!!!  Because we had plenty of time I asked all the women in the audience to get up, tell us who they were, where they were from, what they did and to give us a hot tip – something they were watching, listening to, reading, a Facebook page they love or just a life hack.   Gosh it was good listening to them all, and getting to know each person a little more.  Here is our panel – (left to right) Cassie Cox, Felicity Fulcher, Sue Stafford and me – Danielle Doyle… so it was CC, FF, SS & DD!!!!

Then it was over to the panel.  We did the same and then it was just a really great conversation type affair.  Such fun.  I think the panel might become a thing at Barkly Women’s Day, I just loved it and I think everyone else did too.

Our tables were decorated beautifully thanks to the help of my friends.  We were also very generously gifted bucket loads of makeup from Sandi & Christo Grove from Cincotta Chemist at Indooroopilly.  You should have seen it all – so much lipstick, eyeshadow, nail polish, dry shampoo, waxing strips and so much more.  Wow – and it was all Revlon make up too.

So kind of them and it turns out this chemist is at my local shopping centre when I visit Brisbane, will definitely be calling in next time I am in the big smoke.  Thanks so much Sandi & Christo, the ladies loved it and couldn’t believe their eyes.

Thanks to all of the women who made the huge effort to travel down for the day (or night as well), it was so much fun.  Can’t wait to do it all over again next year.
