Bed Makeover – The K-Mart Challenge

October 23, 2015

I decided it was high time our bed had a make over, so last week while I was in town I gave myself a little challenge.  Because I always love a good challenge.  I hot footed it to the local boutique, I think some people call it K-Mart, and shopped up a storm.  Well I didn’t really, it was a pretty quick shop but we won’t let that get in the way of a good story…

I gave myself a budget of $150.00.  My bed has been bugging me all year.  I have somehow lost a pillowcase from my doona set and the other one was frayed. How on earth does one lose a pillowcase for goodness sake.  Anyway, it just wasn’t floating my boat.  I have noticed that K-Mart have really picked up their game when it comes to home wares and I always love a good bargain.  Actually I normally spend quite a bit on bedding and can’t go past a good high thread count sheet set.  But, back to the challenge…

Here is what my bed looked like before…

I ducked into K-Mart just before I was due to meet the girls for lunch.  All up I reckon it took me 20 minutes to find everything I wanted.  First things first – the quilt cover set.  Now, be warned, if you are shopping online the cheap and nasty polyester quilt cover sets look much better than what they actually look like in real life.  The colours are definitely not that great so I steered clear of them.  But there was a selection of pure cotton sheets and quilt covers, so I stuck to this section.  And let me tell you (before you turn up your nose) they are pretty bloody nice.  I decided to go for the plain white doona cover set – a bit boring I know but so crisp and reminds me of a 5 star hotel.  It is just like the bed I slept in at the Hilton.  Here cast your peepers over it….

How nice is that, and the beauty of a plain doona cover is that you can mix and match any cushion or throw.  This particular set cost me $42.00 for a king size set.  Can you even believe it!?!  They really do have some lovely pure cotton sets in store.

Then it was onto the sheets.  Guess what – K-Mart have actually got nice sheets.

K-Mart Sheets

I couldn’t believe my eyes.  I really did think I was going to have to slum it with some cheap and nasty poly blend sheets, all for the sake of the challenge but I was so wrong.  I found some 500 thread count 100% cotton sheets made from Australian grown cotton!  I still didn’t think they would be that great, but for $49.00 (queen set) I was willing to risk it.  When I took them from the package I was shocked, soooooooo gorgeous, soft and almost satin like.   When I got in bed that night I felt like I really was at a hotel, the sheets were even nicer to sleep in.  I was gobsmacked people.  They are actually really good!  $49!  $49 I tell you.  Get moving, run don’t walk.  Oh and by the way our bed is a queen size with a king size doona.

Now onto the cushions.  There is a great selection of cushions in store at the moment and I decided to add some bling with these gold sparkly cushions and one feature cushion.  $10.00 for these little darlings…

And lastly a print for the wall, I just loved this one and it even matched the cushions, sort of.  This one was $12.

K-Mart Wall Hanging

So all up the whole make over cost me $154.00 which I was pretty impressed with.

This isn’t a sponsored post, I just love sharing great finds with you guys.  Wouldn’t say no to a little collaboration with the old folk at my local boutique…. K-Mart though. I am so impressed with their stuff at the moment.

    Good morning!! Happy Friday!!
Love, love, love your new bedding! Love that bed too! I updated my doona set recently, from Big W 🙂 $35 for a cool triangle print. The last sheet set I bought was actually from Cotton On, online, great quality! (I didn’t even know they did linen, they have a really cute kids range)
    Who’s the Polocrosse player? 🙂

Hi Evie, way to go with your $35 set. Who’d have thought. I am still shocked with the quality of the sheets. My husband used to play polocrosse.

It does look great and I agree with Treens, I thought the same thing!
I have had great success with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, a beautiful chalky finish but best thing ever is no sanding or any prep! Just slap it on sticks to anything. Just a thought!!

Wow, that looks so fantastic, makes such a lovely difference….and if the bed is pretty and the room has a nice feel i am sure you do sleep better. Well, that’s what i reckon anyway! Love it, you’ve done well! And i forgot to also say before in my other (post) comment, that the top you had sewn was fantastic! Gosh, makes me feel like i want to drag my old machine out again x 😊

Well done with your efforts and the challenge! I simply couldn’t do white even if just to get that 5 star feel. Due to a kid and pets who always like to sneak into my room because it’s got ” The Big Bed”, I’d have unmovable stains on the beautiful whiteness in no time! I hope you won’t encounter that issue. Looks great!

Ha ha ha, I have cracked down and told the boys that no one is to get on my bed under any circumstances… aren’t I mean! I did arrive home from a weekend away to an unmade bed with a dusty mark on it. It did dust off though. But yes – there are challenges. ha ha ha.

Looks really awesome, I have a black cat so I have to steer clear of light coloured quilts, but I love shopping at K-Mart they have a huge selection of everything one needs.
