O my goodness. What is wrong with me? Why is it that I put off jobs that are actually quite easy? I put them off and put them off. In my head they are so much harder than what they turn out to be, once I actually do them. I build them up in my psycho little brain and they become all consuming and filed in the too hard basket.
Do you do this too? Like just this very moment….I did a job I had been putting off for months…since November last year – i kid you not – and it was such a simple little job. Our pool chlorinator is broken and Mr Chardy has been onto me to call the Pool people, who we bought it through, and see if we can get a new one on warranty. I emailed – of course I did – because I just hate talking on the phone. I know – can you even believe it, the person who loves people hates talking on the phone. Anyway, so after a few emails back and forward they needed my invoice/purchase date which for some reason I didn’t have. They gave me a number to call (this was on 27th January) and I have put it off since then, scared to pick up the phone.
Well – I did it – I called the lovely lady and within under a minute Courtney had me sorted and is sending me the invoice.
Gee – that was hard wasn’t it….. WHY – WHY do I make things so much harder than they are? I keep telling you all to JUST DO IT, and yet I can’t even take my own advice. And dear me it feels good when you have done it.
So, today, lets do those things that we have put off. For me it is vacuuming the pool and washing my car – wow, they sound hard don’t they!!! There may also be 50 thousand sausages that need bagging & wages to do as well. So I am off – to crack those little suckers off the list. I am going to challenge myself…because we all know I am quite competitive. I wonder if can do them all before lunch time: Pool, Car, Wages….just watch me go.
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. GAME ON PEOPLE!
God, look at me talking to myself, setting myself challenges… YES – I do need to get out more.
What is one thing that you have made seem so much bigger than it should be?
Surely I am not alone.
There is a great book about this very topic called “Eat that Frog” By Brian Tracy. I have listened to it on Audio Book – it is really good – so you think I would have my shit together wouldn’t you. Lets all start eating those frogs first thing in the morning!
I usually try and do one frog a day. However, I currently have so many frogs – they are breeding I am sure of it! I think you CAN! X
Yes, you do have a lot of frogs at the moment, but you will get there!!!
You are NOT alone, last night I got through 3 jobs that I have put off for a week, felt great to get it done! I suppose it’s just we don’t like doing chores that aren’t interesting, not easy to solve when there are other funs things to do! The biggest job I have to do is biff out old toys, but that is a BIGGIEE and will require mum and wine!
You can do it with the toys, and gee it will feel good getting rid of them. I am on a roll, car done, pool done now wages…..god we are truly facing the big issues here aren’t we – first world problems/jobs!!!
For two years, I looked at my shoes all piled up and scrappy and thought that I should go through them and tidy up/chuck out the ones I no longer wear. I kept putting it off because it was going to be such a massive job. It took me 7 mins. Seriously! I’d followed the flylady’s advice to put my timer on for 15 min and just do a bit of it. I was finished with 8 min to spare!!
This is so true Ainsley, why the hell do we think these jobs are so big? It isn’t like we are conducting brain surgery or anything, they are silly little jobs that 9/10 take less than 10 minutes!!! I managed to get all my frogs eaten before Lunch today, feels good too. Well done with your shoes!!!!
I too hate phoning people. I’m so glad I’m not the only one. I just have this total irrational fear of it – at least, I think that’s why I ALWAYS put calling people off. I’m pretty confident with people in person, but try to get me to call someone, and I’m always looking for a way out. Love the idea of doing one frog a day. Must give it a go! That book sounds great.
That is me exactly Heike, I would much rather email, our phone has a delay too which is so annoying and really hard to talk to people without sounding completely ignorant. Great to know I am not alone! 🙂
I have heaps of frogs. Ate one yesterday – cleaning out clothes and other stuff in spare room. Took 11 minutes. I always build up little tasks at work as being huge. Calling people. Getting quotes. Culling my emails. So silly!
Me too!!!!! Me too!!!! And they turn out to be soooooo easy and quick, god help us Kate.
This is so me this week. I’ve had at least fifteen admin tasks that need doing this week and on Tuesday I ticked off 8 of them and I have slowed down to a grinding halt – two yesterday and only one today. Of course I’ve left the biggest to last and it has been on my to do list for 2 years. I must eat that frog tomorrow! x
You go girl – EAT THAT BLOODY FROG!!!! Report back, I want it done by 11am!! Go!! Geez it feels good when you do them. Good luck Vanessa 🙂 – now would you stop putting such great things on your blog….I seem to buy something from every post!!!
I love the idea of eating frogs. Proverbial ones, not actual ones!
It works…ate heaps today Mrs T. They were delicious…. the funny thing was that I found a big green frog in my toilet after writing this post and I never get frogs in our toilet here at the house – if that wasn’t a sign then I don’t know what it was….:)
Really. … neglecting the pool. .. hmmmmm we may have to discuss this more….. hahaha
Ha ha ha – the shame FBH, the shame. Don’t fret, it is ok and it is clean.
