Kate Spade New York

June 16, 2018

I guess if you had not heard of the brand Kate Spade before, chances are you do now.  Just so sad.  I would like to tell you about my journey with Kate Spade.  It all started with my friend Felicity.

You all know how I live under a rock and I am always late to the party on a trend.  Well to say I was late to the Kate Spade party would be a total understatement.  How did I miss it?  How?

Apparently it has been around forever, ok so not forever but long before I ever found out about this fabulous brand.  Kate and Andy Spade founded this brand back in 1993.    I mean I lived in Sydney for crying out loud  – for a few years, how did I not see this brand.  I am hoping it had not really reached Australia when I was living in Sydney.  I know the Kate Spade New York stores are only relatively new in Australia – or are they?  But honestly I don’t think I joined the Kate Spade party until about 2014!!!  Give or take a year.

I know – gasp.  My friend Felicity introduced me to it and I have never looked back.  By this stage Kate and Andy had sold the company but that is beside the point.  It is everything I love – bows, stripes, spots and Chardy Pink!  Bright bold colours, stylish and classic.  I love everything about Kate Spade New York.  It is fun and fabulous.

So of course the one thing I wanted to do when we were in New York City was to find a Kate Spade boutique.  And that we did.  On 5th Avenue none the less.  We don’t do things by halves.  We definitely got carried away!

We visited many times actually.  On our first visit we had to do a bit of speed shopping at we had a booking at Bar 65 at 6:30 that evening and it was 5:30pm already, we didn’t hold back.

I walked in, wandered around for about 2 seconds, found a black and white striped bag and it was all over.  The lovely sales assistant told me that you could personalise it and change the look and I was putty in her hands.  I said “shut up… show me”…

I was sold.  The bag who I now refer to as “Kate, my daughter” wears different dresses.  Her name is actually Candace, but I prefer Kate.  I basically have 6 bags in 1.  It is so cool.  I can have red, pink, black with white spots, black and white stripes, just plain black or beige with a big black bow.

I had to choose between a black or a beige bag but the black won in the end,  it just looked so much smarter.  I don’t think I have ever owned a black bag.

There is nothing I don’t like about this bag.  It had Chardy written all over it.  Lock it in Mora, i’ll take it thank you very much.  I quickly found some jewellery, a phone case and a candle to go with her and we were off.  We literally had to run back to the hotel to get changed, after Mora told me she didn’t think we could wear denim in Bar 65, I also changed Kate’s dress and we were off again.

Katie in the wild….

Of course when I found this pair of black and white striped shoes I just had to have them, they match Katies striped dress perfectly and I love nothing more than a matchy matchy ensemble.

Bec also shopped up a storm, we are talking dresses, shoes, perfume, tops and scarves.

We have not looked back my friends.  Here is the bangle I bought (it has matching earrings of course!) All of my signature colours rolled into one bangle…

And check out my new Kate Spade gumboots…well that is what I am calling them anyway…

Aren’t they just so cute.  They are rubber.  I can wear them in mud and wash them off.  They are my new station run arounds!!

We went back a few more times during our stay.  We just couldn’t help ourselves.  It was our happy place.

So you can imagine the shock when we returned to Australia and then news broke about poor Kate Spade.  It was just so sad.

Quite a while ago now my gorgeous friend Andrea (who is also a massive Kate Spade fan) from Sublime Finds got me onto a podcast called How I built This.  The very first interview I listened to was with Kate & Andy Spade.  So interesting.  If you are after a good podcast get onto it, you won’t be sorry.

So tell me… what do you think of Katie?  She is pretty special isn’t she!!!  It is safe to say that the beige with black bow dress is my favourite, followed by the spotty number.  Which one do you like?
