Miss Chardy’s Guide to Station Cooking – Part 7 – Dessert

March 17, 2017

We have eaten our way through the whole outback cattle station menu and I feel full just thinking about dessert.  I must admit I am not a huge lover of cooking dessert.  I do like to eat it though and perhaps that is where the problem lies.

So what is your go do dessert recipe?  Mine is always a self saucing pudding.  I am not all that creative when it comes to dessert, I wan’t something quick and easy and a pudding ticks those boxes every time.  My absolute favourite would have to be a butterscotch self saucing pudding.  This can be whipped up and in the oven in 5 minutes flat and god it is good.  Serve it with custard & cream (and ice-cream if you are lucky enough to have this) and you will have a winner.    Of course the good old chocolate self saucing pudding runs a close second to this one.

Dessert is a funny old thing.  Sometimes you will have a crew with a really sweet tooth and other years they aren’t all that fussed with dessert.  So you just need to get a feel for what they like and what they eat.  If they aren’t huge dessert eaters they may prefer some tinned fruit, custard and jelly.  It always pays to have some fruit, custard and jelly on hand in the fridge for the nights you aren’t cooking a dessert.

That list should get you out of trouble although I must admit it is probably not complete.  You see I am in town at the moment and I forgot to take photos of my favourite recipes so I could type this blog post.  I am totally unprepared really.  So I may have to update this particular post when I get home.  We are in town for a School of the Air Activity Day and Clancy also had a Prep – get to know you day yesterday.  Of course it is wonderful to be in town and catching up with our friends, I definitely think I will be lunching with the ladies today while the kids are at school.   It doesn’t seem like that long since I have seen them, but truth be told it is 3.5 months!

Another favourite recipe of mine is this easy PAVLOVA recipe – it has 2 ingredients.  You can’t go wrong.

So please tell me what I have left off this list of dessert ideas.

I love dessert after dinner but my Mr can take it or leave it, so it’s usually a couple of chunks of chocolate!!!

I do love dessert but it isn’t something I eat that often. Sticky date pudding was always popular and I love caramel self saucing pudding. Your list is pretty much the list of favourites from when I was younger and quite frankly I’d happily eat any of them.
