NBN Announcement: Skymuster Plus

November 14, 2018

On Sunday Mrs Savvy B – probably now better known as Shelly (because that is actually her name) from Trek West Tailored Hiking Tours – and I headed into Mt Isa.  We were invited to a round table breakfast with the CEO of NBNCo – Stephen Rue.  Of course I love nothing better than a girls road trip so, needless to say, I was so there Jackie O.  NBN were making an announcement and I wasn’t going to miss that, where would I be without our internet.

So off we went, it was great to be able to actually catch up for a good long natter on the way in, not to mention a cheeky wine or 2 when we arrived.

Monday morning we were up and at it bright and early to face the paparazzi, oops I mean the NBN cameramen who wanted to get some footage of us on camera as they made the announcement.  We still didn’t know what this announcement was.

So in case you missed it my friends the big news was this…  Oh look, I could fumble around using my own words to try and explain what is happening but how about I just share with you the Announcement the CEO – Stephen Rue – made over on the NBNCo website….

Coming soon: Sky Muster™ Plus

I am delighted to announce that in 2019, we are scheduled to launch a new Sky Muster™ Plus service to help meet the ever-growing need for more data.

There are two key improvements being made through this product evolution:

  • More data capacity – Data allowance exemptions will be provided for key functional uses of the nbn™ access network. This means that at a wholesale level, nbn will not count the use of essential internet services – including email, general web-browsing and common critical smartphone and PC operating system software updates – towards monthly data allowances.‡
  • Enjoy supplementary burst above the wholesale download speed – This new product will help deliver faster download speeds by providing access to a wholesale 25Mbps product that, furthermore can now boost above 25Mbps when applications and network support allows. This may help key software and services to deliver even better performance.*

What this means for an average user is that when they exhaust their monthly data allowance, wholesale download speeds will not be slowed down for regular web activities like accessing emails or internet banking.

Activities such as gaming and video streaming will continue to contribute towards the overall monthly data limit of users and, once the cap is reached, will be speed-shaped down as they are now. However the unmetered essential services can continue to function unshaped*.

This will give people in regional and rural Australia the peace of mind that emailing your loved ones or accessing internet banking need not slow down once your monthly data limit has been exceeded.

Isn’t that fabulous news!!!  It was so wonderful to be one of the few invited to this breakfast with the NBN crew.  Stephen and his team had a chat to us and then asked for our feedback or questions.  They really wanted to hear from the people who rely on this service so of course I wasn’t missing the opportunity to tell him who we are and where we live out here at Bum Truck Nowhere.

Here we are with Stephen – CEO

And this lovely lady is Felicity – NBN Chief Corporate Affairs Officer – (with Shelly) – Felicity is based in the Sydney NBN Office and she is a bloody legend!

This is Brent – he is a NBN Technician and is based in Mt Isa!

What has NBN and Skymuster done for me?  Well it has allowed me to connect with people all over the world through my blog.  Since Skymuster was introduced it has meant better internet speed during the day.  Before this I was getting up at 4am to pump out a blog post because after 7 it was basically useless to try and get online.  We would run out of data more often than not and that meant that my kids couldn’t fully participate in their daily school lessons.  It was very frustrating indeed.  So we really have come a long way thanks to NBN.  This Skymuster Plus is just more exciting news for people like me living out here in the middle of nowhere.

A massive thank you to the tireless work that Kristy Sparrow from Better Internet for Rural, Regional & Remote Australia – without you we would be nothing.   Also to Wendy Hick – Federal ICPA President – your endless work to help remote Australia with better education and communication does not go unnoticed!!

Thanks so much for inviting us NBN.  Gosh it was good to meet the real people behind the company.  I hope we can continue to work together in some way.  It was such fun!

Now back to it.  How is your week going?

What does this Skymuster Plus announcement mean to you?
