Recommendations: Audiobooks

October 31, 2016

Are you on the hunt for a good book to read?  Of course when I say read I actually mean listen to because really, who has time for reading these days?  I seem to fall asleep if I read of a night time and it takes me about 3 months just to get through a book.  With an audiobook I can listen away while I am doing all the mundane boring jobs like mowing, cleaning, washing etc.  Makes it way more fun!  Oh not to mention the long drives.

If you are new to the whole audiobook scene that’s ok, it is easy.  I have a step by step post – How to download your free audiobook in 7 simple steps.  Just click the link to find out how.

Another option is to join your local library, you can then use Borrow Box to download your audiobooks – from the comfort of your own home, onto your device, too easy.  I find that Mt Isa City Library doesn’t really have a whole lot to choose from, but it is always worth having a look on there first before you pay for a book.   Larger libraries probably have a better selection.  Head on over and read THIS post to find out how to use Borrow Box.

So here are some great Audiobook suggestions that I have rolled lately…

The Accidental Entrepreneur by Janine Allis

I absolutely loved this book.  Can’t recommend it highly enough.  I keep telling my friends about it.  Janine Allis is the Boost Juice lady or you may know her from Shark Tank.

This lady is amazing.  The audiobook is very easy to listen to and she is just so honest and real.  It just shows you where honest hard work can get you.  I would listen to this one again.  Here is the blurb from Audible

In The Accidental Entrepreneur, author Janine Allis shares the secrets and skills that took her from housewife to entrepreneur to head of a multinational corporation. As the founder of Boost Juice, Janine has journeyed from zero formal business training to leading a company with over 400 stores in 12 countries. This audiobook takes you down the long road that she travelled, including some quirky stops along the way, and gives you valuable insight into taking the alternative road to business success. You’ll learn how she captured the hearts of consumers with her “love life” philosophy and how to hang on to your core values, build the right team, listen to your customers, and market like the big boys. As a working mother of four, Janine understands the demands of modern life and shows you how you can accomplish your goals without sacrificing your health or your relationships in the process.

What I Know for Sure by Oprah Winfrey

Another easy read and a quick one, only 3hours and 53 mins.  Oprah is so wise isn’t she.  I found myself jotting down quotes while I was listening to this one.  It is like you are having a chat with Oprah because she is also the narrator.

The inspirational wisdom of Oprah Winfrey, collected for the first time in a beautiful book. After film critic Gene Siskel asked her, ‘What do you know for sure?’ Oprah Winfrey began writing the ‘What I Know For Sure’ column in O, The Oprah Magazine. Saying that the question offered her a way to take ‘stock of her life’, Oprah has penned one column a month over the last 14 years, years in which she retired The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Organized by theme – joy, resilience, connection, gratitude, possibility, awe, clarity, and power – these essays offer a rare and powerful glimpse into the mind of one of the world’s most extraordinary women. Candid, moving, exhilarating, uplifting, and dynamic, the words Oprah shares in What I Know For Sure shimmer with the sort of wisdom and truth that listeners will turn to again and again.  {Credit: Audible}

True Spirit by Jessica Watson

Wow, what an AMAZING young lady.  You know her – the young girl who sailed solo around the world at just 16 years of age.  And you know what else – she sailed continuously for around 8 months.  She didn’t get off that little yacht once.  Can you even imagine.  How brave.  At one stage she was upside down in huge waves.  I just loved this book.

Written and read by Jessica Watson, this is the story of a remarkable girl who followed her dream and conquered the world.
There is something different about adventurers, about the way their minds work. They look at the world as a place of challenges, and though they know what fear is, they refuse to be hindered by it.
True Spirit is Jessica’s story, and in it she will detail her preparation, her journey and her battle with sleep deprivation, gale-force winds, mountainous seas, natural hazards like whales and icebergs and holding firm against the solitude that most of us can only imagine dealing with, alone on a vast sea with no land to be seen and no help close at hand.
The name Jessica Watson will soon be part of sailing history. She will join Jesse Martin and Kay Cottee as someone all Australians can be inspired by. Jessica Watson is a dreamer who dares to do. {Credit: Audible}

    I have always been about podcasts but audio books sound like such an awesome idea! I am like you and fall asleep too quickly if I read at night, but I’m always looking for something to listen to while I do chores! Do most authors narrate their own books? I don’t know if an audio book would appeal to me in the same way if it wasn’t read by the author. I must look into that!

      Hi Kez, oh I am the same… love my Podcasts but I find myself running out of podcasts to listen to, so that is when I turn to audiobooks. No, mostly the author doesn’t narrate but it is ok. Give them a go.

    I’m with you I absolutely LOVE audio books and have listened to literally hundreds over the years. I do an enormous amount of driving and am in the car for hours on end and it’s such a wonderful way to pass the time. I definitely have my favorite narrators and on the whole prefer English to American ones, Stephen Fry being at the top of the list. I also love Davina Porter who brings the ‘Outlander’ series to life.

      I keep seeing Stephen Fry on Audible. What other suggestions do you have? They are so great for driving aren’t they. I get really sick of my music after about 2 hours.

    Hi, discovered audio books are great for travelling with kids. Never would have made from Alice Springs to Brisbane and back via Gladstone or the move back to Queensland without them. They love ‘Cliffhanger’ & ‘Buried Alive’ by Jacqueline Wilson and ‘Sunglasses’ – 5 stories by Kym Lardner. All the Harry Potter’s, Star Wars, etc. They are funny for the adults too. One of our favs is ‘LT’s Theory of Pets’ by Stephen King (not horror or long) a rare recording of Mr King reading one of his books. The Mt. Isa library should be able to order books from the Queensland State Library for you. If you and some neighbours buy audio books you can start your own book sharing club. You can buy audio books from Apple iTunes. Check it out – https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/audio-books-by-audiobooks/id521227008?mt=8
