Wow, I just finished a brilliant book. And when I say book, you know I didn’t actually read it so much as listened to it while I did quite a few boring jobs. Yep, it kept me entertained during 15 odd hours of mundane jobs: mowing, whippersnipping, cleaning, washing, folding, ironing etc. Got a long trip coming up? Download it … stat!
I just finished Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
This is only the second Liane Moriarty book I have read. The first was The Husband’s Secret which was equally as brilliant and captivating.
Her books certainly hook you in. I must say it does take a couple of chapters to get your head around who everyone is and really get into the story line but once you are in you can’t stop.
Big Little Lies plot is based around young Mums with kids just starting school and I am sure it would really resonate with many of you. Me – not so much because my kids don’t go to a mainstream school so issues that are covered in the book haven’t really had an impact on us such as bullying. I was reading along thinking “does this shit really happen???” But you know what – I know it does. Not sure how you town Mum’s put up with it. I guess I might get a taste once the boys start boarding school. Should be interesting.
Publishers Summary:
Pirriwee Public is a beautiful little beachside primary school where children are taught that ‘sharing is caring.’ So how has the annual School Trivia Night ended in full-blown riot? Sirens are wailing. People are screaming. The principal is mortified.
And one parent is dead.
Was it a murder, a tragic accident or just good parents gone bad? As the parents at Pirriwee Public are about to discover, sometimes it’s the little lies that turn out to be the most lethal. Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, school-yard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.
The main underlying theme is bullying and domestic violence. It really makes you stop and think.
I actually downloaded the book after listening to Mia Freedman interview Liane on the No Filter Podcast.
Apparently filming has just finished for a HBO TV series adaptation of Big Little Lies, starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon…. how exciting, can’t wait to see it!

I have a signed copy of her latest one – Truly Madly Guilty – that I just finished and loved.
Want me to post it up?
A x
I might get it on Audiobook – but thanks so much for the offer. Takes me forever to read a book these days, ha ha ha.
Loved, loved, loved this book! One of my top fav’s from last year. I have just finished another book I couldn’t put down, you might be interested in, BETWEEN SISTERS by Kristin Hannah. SOOOOO good. Strong characters, great plot and it will have you laughing and crying by turns.
Hi Margareta, thanks so much for the suggestion, will definitely look into it!!
I’m “old school” so I have to hold the book in my hands to read. I have read every one of her books and have loved every one of them. As I know I am nearing the end, I slow down my reading because I never want the story to end. As an avid reader, I would recommend reading them all.
I know Gail… there is nothing better than reading the actual book – It just seems to take me forever lately so the Audiobooks let me enjoy them while I am doing boring jobs. Thanks so much for letting us know that you loved them all, I am looking forward to reading another one!
I was totally suckered in by this one too Chards. Good read! Haven’t ready The Husband Secret, might have to give that one a go! x
Definitely check out The Husbands Secret… I am mowing today and have just started listening to Truly Madly Guilty… taking a bit to get into but I know it is going to get good and suck me in.. so I am sticking with it.
I too enjoy her writing, I don’t have children so can’t really relate, but the story lines are indeed compelling
I agree Cate. I just loved The Husbands Secret and Big Little Lies.
